SFP modules: 1G SFP, 10G SFP+ and 25G SFP28 transceivers
An SFP module (small form-factor pluggable transceiver) plugs into an SFP port on a switch, router, OLT or media converter and turns the port’s electrical signal into light on a fiber, or into a copper RJ45 link. SFP modules run at 1 Gbit/s, SFP+ at 10G and SFP28 at 25G, all in the same size of cage. ZeroLine Connect supplies every common type from Optics Valley module makers, coded for the switches you name and tested in a host before shipping.

|---|---|
| Same rack or next rack | A DAC or AOC cable costs less than two modules and a patch cord |
| Copper cabling up to 100 m at 1G | 1000BASE-T copper SFP |
| Multimode fiber inside a building, up to 300–400 m at 10G | SR optics (SX at 1G); check the reach for your OM grade |
| Single-mode fiber up to 10 km | LX at 1G, LR at 10G or 25G |
| Single-mode fiber 10–80 km | ER (40 km) or ZR (80 km); check the link budget |
| Only one fiber free | A BiDi pair: two modules with opposite wavelengths |
| Several links over one fiber pair | CWDM or DWDM modules, one channel each, with a passive mux at both ends |
| GPON network | OLT SFP of class B+ or C+, matched to your splitter and distance budget |
Reaches are typical values from IEEE 802.3 and module datasheets. Check every long link against its loss budget with the fiber loss calculator.
| Form factor | Rate | Lanes | Fits which port |
|---|---|---|---|
| SFP | 1G | 1 | SFP ports; most SFP+ ports also take it and run at 1G |
| SFP+ | 10G | 1 | SFP+ and SFP28 ports; not 1G-only SFP ports |
| SFP28 | 25G | 1 | SFP28 ports; many run it at 10G in SFP+ ports |
| QSFP+ / QSFP28 | 40G / 100G | 4 | QSFP ports; a larger cage, not interchangeable with SFP |
Whether a port runs a slower module depends on the switch: check its datasheet or send us the model.
| Reading | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Temperature | Module case temperature; high values point to poor airflow or a hot copper module |
| Supply voltage | The 3.3 V supply from the host port |
| Laser bias current | Rises as the laser ages |
| Transmit power | Light leaving the module, in dBm |
| Receive power | Light arriving; compare it with the receiver’s sensitivity and overload limits |
Defined by SFF-8472 and read in the switch’s interface diagnostics. Optical modules have it; copper RJ45 modules usually report less.
| Item | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Switch or host model and software version | The module is coded for it, so the port accepts it without warnings |
| Rate and standard (e.g. 10GBASE-LR) | Sets wavelength, reach and fiber type |
| Fiber and connector | Single-mode or OM grade; LC duplex, simplex or SC |
| Temperature grade | Commercial 0–70 °C indoors; industrial −40–85 °C in street cabinets and outdoor enclosures |
| Quantity, labels and spares | Serial lists and labels to your scheme; a few spares per site |

FAQ
SFP modules: questions buyers ask
What is the difference between SFP and SFP+?
Size and shape are the same; the speed is not. SFP runs at 1 Gbit/s, SFP+ at 10 Gbit/s and SFP28 at 25 Gbit/s. Most SFP+ ports accept a 1G SFP and run that port at 1G, but a 10G SFP+ module does not work in a 1G-only SFP port.
Will a third-party SFP module work in our switches?
Modules follow the multi-source agreements, and we code them for the switch models and software versions you name, then test them in a host before shipping. Send the models with your enquiry and the offer confirms compatibility for each line.
Single-mode or multimode SFP?
Match the module to the fiber already installed. Multimode SR and SX modules suit links inside a building, up to a few hundred metres. Single-mode LX, LR, ER and ZR modules cover 10 to 80 km and every FTTH network. Our guide on single-mode vs multimode fiber compares reach and cost.
What is a BiDi SFP?
A bidirectional module sends and receives on one fiber, using two wavelengths such as 1310 and 1550 nm. BiDi modules come in pairs, one for each end with the wavelengths swapped, and halve the fibers a link needs.
Do copper RJ45 SFP modules run hot?
Yes, 10GBASE-T copper modules draw more power than optical ones and run warm, and their typical reach is 30 m. Leave a free port between them where you can, or use an optical module or a DAC cable for 10G links.
