ODF optical distribution frame: rack-mount and sliding drawer

An ODF (optical distribution frame) is the rack in a central office where fiber cables are terminated and cross-connected. Buyers also call this an ODF fiber frame. ZeroLine Connect supplies rack-mount and sliding-drawer ODFs for that room. The frame holds many fiber patch panels and cross-connects hundreds of fibers. It is not one panel, and it is not a wall termination box or an outdoor distribution box.

Overview
TypeWhat it isWhere it goes
Rack-mount ODFA frame of fixed shelves. Each shelf is a fiber patch panelCentral office
Sliding-drawer ODFThe same central-office frame, built so a shelf pulls out and the splice tray can be worked on in front of the rackCentral office

These two formats are the ODF row on our ODN family page: rack-mount, sliding drawers, central office. The photograph is the catalogue image already used on the fiber patch panel page, an MPO panel with LC connections and a cassette. It shows a shelf that mounts in the frame. It is not a photograph of a whole ODF. "Hundreds of fibers" is the scale already on our fiber termination box page.

What is the difference between an ODF, a fiber patch panel and a fiber termination box?
PartWhat it doesTypical place
ODF (optical distribution frame)Holds many shelves and cross-connects hundreds of fibersCentral office
Fiber patch panelOne shelf of adapters. Typically 12–48 ports per 1U, more in 2U–4U, or 96 to 144+ fibers per U on a high-density MPO shelfInside the ODF, or alone in a data-room rack
Fiber termination boxEnds a cable on adapters: a 1–4 port wall outlet, an indoor box, or an outdoor FAT distribution box that can hold a splitterHome, riser, pole or wall

The ODF row is the one on our fiber termination box page. The shelf densities are the ones on that page (12–48 per 1U, more in 2U–4U) and on our MPO range (96 to 144+ fibers per U). A wall box is not an ODF.

What to specify when you order an ODF
ItemWhy it matters
Rack size, fixed or sliding drawerSay how many 19-inch shelves, and whether they pull out. Our ODN range lists central-office ODFs as rack-mount, sliding drawers
Core countThe frame cross-connects hundreds of fibers. Each shelf uses the densities above. State the count the room needs
AdapterLC, SC or FC, the connectors we already supply on patch cords and on PLC splitters
PolishUPC or APC. A central-office shelf is usually SC/APC on PON and LC/UPC on Ethernet, the pairing on our connector-types guide
Pigtails and splice traysA loaded shelf ships with adapters and 0.9 mm pigtails in 12-colour sets, spliced or left for the site. An empty shelf takes your own pigtails. The splice tray is where the cable joins those pigtails
Cable entryName how many cables enter, and from where, so the trays and the routing match the room
LabelsPort labels to your rack plan

Loss on a loaded shelf is the patch-cord limit we already publish: insertion loss ≤ 0.3 dB and return loss ≥ 50 dB UPC or ≥ 60 dB APC, typical maxima per mated connector. No price is stated here. The offer names the frame.

Options

  • Rack-mount or sliding-drawer ODF for a central office
  • Shelves loaded with LC, SC or FC adapters, UPC or APC, or left empty
  • 0.9 mm pigtails in 12-colour sets, spliced or left for the site
  • A PLC splitter cassette on a shelf, where the frame is also the split

Tests and documents with every order

  • Adapter and pigtail loss checked on loaded shelves, the same check we publish for loaded panels
  • Pigtails held to the patch-cord limits: insertion loss ≤ 0.3 dB and return loss ≥ 50 dB UPC or ≥ 60 dB APC, typical maxima per mated connector
  • Splice tray fitted where the shelf is the splice point
  • Sample approval before volume

Terms

Ordering, testing and delivery

Typical terms. Your offer states the exact terms for your order.

Minimum order

One drum of cable, one reel of fiber or one carton of passive components. Mixed BOMs are welcome. Samples for evaluation typically ship in 1–3 weeks.

Lead time

Stock items 5–10 working days. Made-to-order cable typically 2–4 weeks. Large framework lots ship on the agreed rollout schedule. Fiber prices moved sharply in 2026, so every cable offer states how long its price holds next to the lead time.

Fiber and cable prices in 2026
Test reports

OTDR data for every drum of cable, insertion and return loss for every connectorised assembly, loss and uniformity reports for splitters, and our pre-shipment inspection report. Third-party pre-shipment inspection on request, at the buyer’s cost.

Labelling and packing

Drum and carton labels to your scheme: project, lot, route or rack. Export cartons, and wooden or plywood drums for cable.

Payment

T/T with 30% deposit and 70% before shipment, or L/C at sight. Rollouts can run under a framework agreement with staged lots.

Delivery

FOB Wuhan or Shanghai, CIF to your port, or door delivery where available. Goods from other ZeroLine lines ship in the same consignment when that saves freight.

What is an ODF (optical distribution frame)?

An ODF is the frame in a central office that terminates incoming fiber and cross-connects it. It holds many fiber patch panels, as rack-mount shelves or sliding drawers, and it is built for hundreds of fibers. A single 19-inch panel is not an ODF. A wall outlet or an outdoor FAT box is a fiber termination box, not an ODF.

What is the difference between an ODF and a fiber patch panel?

A fiber patch panel is one shelf of adapters: typically 12 to 48 ports per 1U, or 96 to 144 or more fibers per U on a high-density MPO panel. An ODF is the frame that holds many of those shelves and cross-connects hundreds of fibers in a central office. Our ODN range lists that frame as rack-mount, sliding drawers. The shelf has its own page.

What is the difference between an ODF and a fiber termination box?

An ODF stands in the central office and cross-connects hundreds of fibers. A fiber termination box is the wall and pole hardware: a 1 to 4 port outlet in the home, an indoor box, or an outdoor distribution box that holds a splitter and serves drops. Both can end a cable on adapters. The place and the fiber count are different.

Should the ODF be rack-mount or a sliding drawer?

Both are central-office frames. A rack-mount ODF is fixed shelves. A sliding-drawer ODF pulls out so the splice tray can be worked on in front of the rack. Our ODN range lists ODF as rack-mount, sliding drawers. Say which one the room needs when you ask for a quote.

What should an ODF RFQ specify?

Rack size, whether the shelves slide, the core count, the adapter (LC, SC or FC), the polish (UPC or APC), whether pigtails and splice trays are fitted, and how the cables enter. Send that on the quote form on this page. We do not publish a price list for the frame.
